Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer built Barbie Land largely as physical sets rather than digital environments, including a hand-painted cyclorama sky and a pool with no visible water, because Greta Gerwig wanted the artificiality legible to the eye rather than smoothed over by CG. Practical construction meant actors interacted with real staircases, slides, and a Dreamhouse facade sized to plastic-doll proportions, forcing genuine physical comedy, jumps that skip stairs, drinks that are mimed, rather than composited gags. The team studied original Mattel playsets and packaging from six decades to source period-accurate colors and furniture silhouettes, then exaggerated scale rather than realism, oversized combs, flattened horizon lines, to keep the eye aware it is watching a toy world staged as habitat. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran cross-referenced the sets so fabric colors sat inside the same saturated palette instead of naturalistic skin-toned neutral schemes.

Look for the painted horizon and absence of real water in the pool scenes, deliberate tells that keep the artificial toy world honest to the eye.
